Percutaneous transluminal atherectomy has been developed for treatment of peripheral artery stenosis 2,5,13. Although Directional Atherectomy (DA) reduces the plaque burden, successful revascularization is not associated with a reduced restenosis rate when compared with others methods of revascularization 4,7,21.
The atherectomy devices perform a cleaning on the inside of the vessel wall, cutting the occlusive material, achieving its repermeabilization while achieving a more or less regular vascular light, maintaining the vascular structure with only part of the parietal structure of the glass. Afterwards, bio- logical healing processes are produced, although it seems that intimal hyperplasia can occur that re-light the repermeabilized lumen
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the his- tologic and morphologic effects of a new high speed rotary atherectomy device (HawkOne) on rabbit iliac arteries.
